What is the meaning of "Kweli" in Kweli Counseling?

"Kweli" is a Swahili word that translates to "truth." At Kweli Counseling, we believe in embracing the truth within ourselves and celebrating self-love unapologetically while recognizing the diverse and collective experiences of the black community.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes and are typically scheduled weekly.

Is Kweli Counseling LGBTQ+-friendly?

Absolutely! At Kweli Counseling, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all clients, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

How long will I be in therapy? How do I know when I am done?

The duration of counseling is different for everyone, as the goals are unique to each individual. Typically sessions are scheduled weekly with the ability to decrease frequency as goals are reached. We will check in throughout our work together to determine how you feel your progress is going. This is a collaborative process that I will make sure we are productive.

Is therapy worth the cost?

Absolutely, therapy is an investment that benefits you for a lifetime. More than just an act of self-care, therapy can positively and profoundly change your future relationships, career opportunities, health and even your finances. I have chosen to base my fees on a sliding scale to limit barriers in engaging in therapy because it’s such a powerful tool, and our community deserves it.

Do you accept insurance?

I currently accept Humana, Aetna, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, BlueCross Blue Shield, United Healthcare and TriCare. I will update the site as I contract with more providers. Until then, I am able to provide you with a superbill that can be presented to your insurance company and potentially reimbursed. You can also pay for services using your Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account cards.

I don't always like talking, isn't therapy just a bunch of talking?

Therapy is a lot of communicating. Sometimes that’s talking, sometimes that’s with pictures or journaling. Therapy is tailored to each individual, so no two counseling sessions are ever alike. I can promise you, I will never push you to do anything you are uncomfortable with. You are in control at Kweli.

Is Teletherapy just as good as in person?

Yes, online therapy has been found to be as effective in reducing symptoms as therapy delivered face-to-face by a clinician. The link below is for a great article that also answers the above question.

What is confidentiality?

Confidentiality is a long word that means I will not repeat anything you tell me to anyone. I only have a duty to warn, and protect, not to gossip or snitch. If you tell me you are going to hurt yourself, I have to do all that I can to protect you. If you tell me about a body buried in your backyard, I have no one to warn or protect, your secret would be safe. Confidentiality and its limits are also discussed in depth during intake.
